VoIP at Work is Not the Same as Home

When I’m out in the community talking to businesses about their phone needs, I often come across a misconception about VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services. Some business owners and managers seem to think that if they get VoIP service at the office, it will be pretty much the same as VoIP service at home (such as Vonage). But that is simply not the case.


What’s the difference between the two categories of VoIP services? Residential VoIP uses an open Internet connection for phone calls, and it is an unmanaged service. This means when residential customers use VoIP, they are conceding their level of service to the open Internet. As a result, sometimes service reliability and call quality can fall short of expectations.

Since you may not be familiar with SIP trunks, let me define this term for you. SIP (pronounced “sip”) stands for Session Initiated Protocol, which the telecommunications industry has standardized as the voice protocol.
